Why Spay/Neuter?
FAQs

altEvery year, thousands of homeless animals enter the East Baton Rouge Animal Control Center. These may be strays that have been picked up off the street, or they may be the offspring of pets that people are unable to care for. Some of the animals are adopted by loving individuals and families, but tragically, the majority of those thousands of animals impounded yearly in our parish are euthanized. However, it doesn't have to be this way... there is hope.

Spaying and neutering is the most humane and logical long-term solution to pet overpopulation. With more animals than homes, the best way to decrease the production of unwanted animals is by stopping the problem at its source. If we continue to euthanize as a method to control the problem, we will constantly be playing catch up with animals that, on average, produce 10 offspring a year.

Low-cost spay and neuter services, provided to people who otherwise would be unable to afford this important procedure for their pet(s), has proven to be the most effective way to decrease the euthanasia rate of unwanted animals in other communities. It is Spay Baton Rouge's goal to make spaying and neutering affordable to all qualified applicants in our community as well, so that we too can decrease the euthanasia rate in East Baton Rouge Parish.
